Wasted computers due to software !
Contrary to belief many of the top computer systems are wasted for many users. Dual core and quad core systems are under utilised by users due to the simple fact that having more cores doesn't mean more performance, Many of the software vendors have not geared there research and development towards the modern compute rand fall behind the development of computer systems by several years.
As many are aware in the change over from windows 98 to Windows xp, much of the software could not be transferred between the operating systems, but that's only part of the story!!
For many years windows has been running on 64 bit operating systems, this allows for the much bigger files and programs that we are using to run more smoothly on the computer systems. 5 Years ago, Windows launched Windows XP Pro 64 bit edition to the masses but ..
...many users found themselves having issues with drivers that the hardware manufactures had not designed and/or were not willing to put money into the development of new drivers for their hardware.
Some of the leading companies have provided basic drivers and graphic card drives were developed and motherboard companies also developed drivers which allowed the computers using 64 bit operating systems to work..
A common mistake is that a computer system with a dual or quad core processor will run better, this is not true! due to the operating system and the software used on the computer will in fact dictate how well the computer will perform. Vista users will notice that there computers have become a high specification than the pervious Windows XP systems. but may have noticed that their computers are slower by comparison. This is due to the operating system and to give you some idea on how this has changed, Windows 98 files of 1kb in XP became 2kb, and in Vista the doubling trend continues. But this does mean that if you put windows 98 on your computer it should run around 5 times faster than windows Vista. But that would be a waste of time..
Software largely used by users is designed for single core processors as they need to be mapped to find the other processor, games are quite far behind and only a handful of games are designed to use the multi core processor and also a hand full of applications such as those used for video editing. And even then some software application are using 32 bit addressing so they limit the systems performance.
32 bit OS's can use 2Gigabyte of Ram and 64 bit can use 8 Gigabytes of ram unless you play with the operating system to make it work, that's not something that the average user is going to be able to do at a drop of a hat.
Due to the lack of investment due to the large number of 32 bit Windows XP Pro systems still on the market, many of the software companies do not want to spend money in the development of new software to meet eh growing performance and new technologies of today's modern computer systems although to those in the know that's 5 year old tech.. things are changing slowly, but it would seem by the time software developers catch up we shall be on yet more new technologies.
We shall soon see the new multi core processors ( more than 4) coming into mainstream and 128 bit and 512 bit processors, this will leave a large gap in the market for developing counties who will still be on 16 bit and 32 bit computers. The new bit rates and processors should see major developments in operating systems and in how we use our computers.
