Video editing computers can be or a lower specification as most computers can edit video, the difference in the hardware will make a large differnce in the workflow more than in other areas as the Processor (CPU) will make the difference with the speed as will the memory (RAM) The quality that you are looking for in your finished movie will dictate the hardware and the software that you will need for a computer system that will provide you with superiour video editing.
At this time software needs to move on to catch up with computer software, Dual core processor are normally catered for in professional computer software as dual processors have been around for some time, quad processors have been around for a short time but only a handful of software designers have made the software for quad processors. We have the quad core processors which will work with some of the software or the software has now been patched/fixed to allow the software to benefit from a quad core computer system.
Quad core computer systems for video editing will reduce the time it would take to make and load RAW video on the computer software. to make a chart on our system, it will proberly show you how the performance changes:
AMD Athlon (older) 15X |
AMD Athon (newer) 10X | AMD Dual Core 6X | Intel Quad core 2.5X.
Lower is better giving you a faster rendering time. In real time performance older systems are .33 and newer systems are 1.9 where higher is better.
The overall performance is also limited by the RAM and the hard drives, this has its roots in the motherboard (mainboard), each shipset that makes up the board will make a difference in the total performance of the board. For example, Nforce2 = 2.6 Nforce4 = 5.4 ATi = 7.4 Higher is better. As you can see this is perfofrmance of the RAM where higher is better. We also found that the boards would make a difference on the data through-put on the hard drive were also effected in the same way.
Hardware features, such as sound cards, graphics cards and hard drive will effect what you can do with the system and will effect the workflow. Hard drives space is always the slowest part of any performance computer, the way in which the dirves are set up lead you to a safe and more effective workflow. For example, RAW video should be kept sperate from the Editing work and the final should again be seperate. You will want a scratch disc and operating system disc, to allow for performance, and then finally you will want a back up and you will want different ways in which to make a hard copy (disc) There is Blue Ray and Dual layer DVD's for this.
