When a computer fails to start there is often no warning and it can happen our of the blue, it can be working fine when it was turned off, but then wont turn back on. This is due ot the main wear problem that computers have or it could be a software fault, normally this is a issue which became loaded into the system changing the configuration of it.

There are a number of reasons that a computer wont turn on. Here is a list of possible faults starting with the most simple first.

Is it turned on?
Other people or another reason the computer may actually be turned off, look and see don’t take if for granted. check the correct lead is plugged in to the mains as well. sometimes when ’someone’ is  looking to plug in the hair drier or phone charger, the computer gets unplugged, and if the plug is the same colour, then you just think its right SO CHECK IT.

Is the power cable secure?
check both ends of the cable to make sure its firmly in place. Its also worth checking the socket with something else to see if it works, like a lamp. Sometimes plug sockets  just give up,  and it can be just one of the dual sockets, so you may want to actually plug into the last point before the computer.

Blown fuse?
If you have a certain type of lead that’s used on your computer, typically a kettle lead, try plugging it into something else that has the same fitting, if that works then the fuse and the lead can be found working or not working. if you cant find the same fitting, replace the fuse with a working fuse (state the obvious).

Cooked?
In summer months, the side may be off the computer case, of someone may have been inside the computer, check the cables are attached inside.
Some motherboards have LED lights on them that will light up if there is power going to the board, but it doesn’t mean that the main board is NOT broken even if you get lights.

Electrical Therapy (ECT)?
Also consider if there has been any thunder storms within a 60 mile+ radius of your home. Most people don’t have surge protectors that work or all points covered..
There is little to no point is having a mains power surge protector if  you are using dial up and have nothing on the phone like or the phone line and router. Electric will still travel down the network cable and Phone cable.

In most cases the PSU ( powersupply) may have been broken and will need to be replaced, on some other cases the motherboard has failed and need replacing. You can find out if its the PSU by taking off all the internal plug and connecting pins 12 and 17 (green and black) on the ATX connector to see if the PSU starts.

 You made it??!!
Well  yeah it says it all, you read the magazines and thought its easy and made the computer out of the best part money could buy, but you never did check to ensure that all the parts work  by themselves and if they work together.. Compatibility is used for a reason, so its back to the drawing board for you. If you want a computer built ask the professionals.

Computer turns on but then turns off almost right away.

Without going into much details on this part as there is a few things that could be wrong here, its either the BIOS or the Software causing the problem, normally it is the BIOS.

If you have just built the computer, then you have put it together wrong.

Possible other causes:

CPU over heat
Faulty PSU or not enough power
System cooling fan fault
In correct BIOS settings (flat battery/ or surged computer)
Mother board fault
Operating system Fault
Driver fault
Computer Virus

In these cases it is best to call in a professional to give you help, you can use our computer systems service to rebuild the computer and put it right, or select the fault diagnostics information from the menu buttons.

There can be other issues that cause problems like spyware or viruses that can cause problems with the computers  registry ( that’s like the software and hardware address book of your computer). also there can be slow start ups (system boot time) which can be fixed.

One of the key failures to start is normally driver related, slightly unhelpful if you don’t have the correct drivers and you cant get your system to start, but if you start in safe mode, this could help fix the problem Click Here to take a look at this software to find the drivers that maybe causing your problem.

If your computer beeps at you, then its not that hard to track down the problem.
if you have the mother board (main board) manual READ IT.  if you don’t have one, pop the side off the case and look for the ID of the motherboard, it is normally around the graphics card port.. ( if you don’t know what that is, find the cable that goes into your monitor and into the computer,  where it is attached in the graphics port.. if its a card, if not then you have on-board graphics) but look in the center of the board or near the bottom front.

You will want the Makers Name and the Model number of the motherboard and then you go to the website and find it, there should be a support or download section where you can download the manual.

Over 70% of problems when you get beeps, is Memory, the other is the processor (CPU)  and if you get a ‘computer start stop’  its the PSU (could be motherboard depending on the stop start it does and if it beeps.
